The Golden Gate of Jerusalem —also called the Gate of Mercy—is an ancient portal on the eastern wall of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. Traditions across Judaism, Christianity and Islam associate it with the coming of the Messiah. Historical sources indicate that the gate was sealed by Muslim authorities centuries ago and walled up by Sultan Suleiman I in the sixteenth century to discourage messianic claims.
